The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Vertical Lift division has an opportunity in the Platform Structures organization & seeking an Experienced Mechanical Drive System Design and Analysis Engineer, Level 3 or 4, in Mesa, AZ to support the Apache / AH-6 Helicopter Team and other attack helicopter variants.

Boeing Drive Systems Design Engineers use their enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity to solve challenging problems that connect with the goals of the project, program, business units, and the enterprise.  Solving these difficult problems involves working under general or minimal supervision and with multidisciplinary teams including various engineering disciplines, production operations, suppliers and customers.

As an Experienced Boeing Drive Systems Design Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the entire life cycle of the Longbow Apache and AH-6 Little Bird Drive Systems components (i.e., gearbox assemblies which includes: gears, bearings, clutches, shafts and couplings) which includes requirements definition, design, tooling, fabrication/procurement, supplier management, test, support of production, support to the field and platform modernization.

Position Responsibilities

  • Translate top-level system requirements into design system level and component requirements 

  • Support or Leads drives system components designs/proposals to provide requirements definition and estimate for assembly, installation, detail and test documentation.

  • Interpret drive system level requirements to perform initial layouts and concepts of drivetrain system designs

  • Design, develop, and maintain detail designs of drivetrain system components, assemblies and installations with,

  • 3-D Computer Aided Engineering tools (i.e., Unigraphics, Romax)

  • Preliminary stress analysis

  • Create and modify drivetrain specifications, design documents, test plans, and test reports

  • Support or leads supplier’s planning development, part manufacturing, test and production activities

  • Manage subsystem and component level testing including development and qualification testing. Support or leads flight testing through planning, procedure, test event, and test report

  • Support or leads the Structural Test Lab and oversee structural components testing conducted in the lab

  • Conduct root cause and corrective action investigations dealing with supplier Notice of Escarpments (NOEs) or field related design issues

  • Provide design support to Liaison Engineers at onsite teardown and assembly shop and to Field Service Representatives with field deployed systems.

  • Mentors, coaches and trains others

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • Experience designing transmission systems including gearboxes, lubrication systems, shafting, bearings, seals etc.

  • Mechanical Drives System component/system test and qualification

  • Engineering experience on defense aircraft platforms

  • Experience with Rotorcraft systems

  • Experience in Rotorcraft Systems Design

  • Experience effectively communicating, both verbally and in writing, and collaborating on multi-discipline teams

  • Experience with drawing, reading and interpreting Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD & T)

  • Experience with three-dimensional parametric modeling using NX/Teamcenter or CATIA/ENOVIA methods and tools

  • Design knowledge of manufacturing for drive systems and/or dynamic components

  • Experience with flight safety parts

  • Experience with material processing for metals (e.g., casting, forging, machining, heat treat, plating, painting, etc.)

  • Experience defining systems strategy, developing systems requirements, designing and prototyping

  • Experience in aircraft system integration

  • Experience managing suppliers/manufacturers of drive system components

  • Experience with conducting root cause corrective action analysis

Typical Education/Experience

Experienced (Level 3)

Bachelors degree and typically 5 or more years experience in an engineering classification or a Masters degree with typically 3 or more years experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Senior (Level 4)

Bachelors degree and typically 9 or more years experience in an engineering classification or a Masters degree with typically 7 or more years experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility. Note: Basic relocation will be offered for eligible internal candidates.

Summary pay range for Experienced Level:  $95,200 – $128,800

Summary pay range for Senior Level:  $115,600 – $156,400
